Research Supported
Research into FA is being performed worldwide by many committed researchers. Canadian researchers have played a leading role in FA research, notably the cloning of the first FA gene and the development of a mouse model by Dr. Manuel Buchwald and his team at the Hospital for Sick Children.
Since 1984, Fanconi Canada has raised money for the following projects:
- Centre hospitalier de l'Université Laval (Québec) to study the role of C-terminal binding protein in FA
- $ 62,250 to the Hospital for Sick Children to study the role of FA proteins in DNA repair.
- $ 62,250 to Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec to study the characterization of the hematopoietic stem cell defect in the FA type 'C' gene mouse model.
- $ 45,000 to the Hospital for Sick Children to launch the Cdn. Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Registry.
- $ 25,000 to Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec to carry out research into "Understanding Fanconi anemia through functional analysis of the FA type 'C' gene protein.
- $ 7,781 to the Hospital for Sick Children to analyse the interaction between FA type 'C' gene and GSTP1 genes and its function in apoptosis.
- Participation of Canadian doctors at international Fanconi anemia conferences.
With your help we can do more. Laboratories continue to tell us that they could move faster with greater resources. Fanconi Canada is committed to fuelling the pace of research to help save our affected kids and adults. Together we will give them a tomorrow!
